Priest Lake Trail Ride - October 2005
In October, my husband and I took a few days to travel to northern Idaho and visit one of our favorite spots, Priest Lake. This area boasts over 400 miles of hiking and riding trails and is a popular recreation destination for summer and winter sports.

As we left the plains behind and began our ascent over the pass into Montana, the snows on the mountains told us that if we hadn't packed winter gear, we'd better stop and get some provisions. The weather was a bit threatening but only added to the dramatic beauty of the lake.

One of our favorite places to stay is Elkins Resort where cabins nestle in the trees and the lake is only a short walk. Since it was off-season, we enjoyed a cabin much larger than we would normally have been able to have. Our dogs were welcomed warmly and we all had a good time.

Hiking trails are abundant, especially on the western side of the lake. Sometimes as we hiked in the dense woods, we could only hear the waves bumping the shore. Then a view would open up through the trees and reveal the lake’s presence.

My favorite hike is into The Roosevelt Old Grove cedar forest where some of the oldest trees on the North American continent still live. This grove is magical and provides a wonderful place to walk or sit for a while and take it all in. The ancient trees are huge, but if you take the time, even the smallest landscapes offer worlds of beauty.

Near the old grove, Granite Creek roars through the forest and tumbles over enormous granite boulders. Granite Falls is a wondrous place to pause, listen, and watch. The water flows; forever different, yet always the same.
