A memoir in progress.
A Council of Horses is an auto-fiction memoir that follows the trials of my lifelong, life-changing love affair with horses. After becoming a horse trainer, I was heartbroken to discover that by practicing the methods I had learned I was hurting the horses I loved. A cast of interesting characters, both people and animals, brought me to a crossroads. Would I change and pursue my passion or bolt like I had from every other disappointment in life? At that critical juncture, I met a woman who opened a door to a gentler understanding of horses. Behind that door, I found a council of horses who guided me through an extraordinary chain of events that redefined my role. I became a healer to help animals, but in the end, they healed me when I chose relationships based on choice, mutual respect, and unconditional love, the kind I had for them as a child.
Most of my beta readers for this manuscript had little to no experience with horses, and the most common comment they gave was, “I learned so much about horses. I had no idea they were so complicated.” I translate that statement to mission accomplished.
When discussing a topic with specialized language, there's a risk of overwhelming some readers and losing them. I hope these web pages that complement A Council of Horses can reduce this risk. (Right) - Parts of the Horse, illustration, ©Nancy K. Camp
